i've been running timelapse continuously over months and years and have yet to see a camera fail due to the shutter.

DSLR use focal-plane shutter which are much bigger, heavier, and more complicated then a point and shoot leaf shutter.  Leaf shutters in point and shoots last a really really long time, much longer then focal-plane shutters.

Yes that's actually what I heard, shutters on P&S cameras seems to be far more simple and thus more resistant.
