I tried version 1.7 and it doesn't work for me.

I do the firmware update, get the boot splash screen of the camera for 1-2 seconds then there's a crack sound as if the shutter closes (that is not normally heard during boot without the firmware) and the camera goes blank.

With version 1.6 it boots and loads fine.

Is there anything I can do to help debug?

I've got the same issue with 1.8, when I load the firmware, the splash screen is shown for a couple of seconds and then the camera turns itself off, I have to try and load it a couple of times (lets say 5 times on average) and then the camera manages to load the CHDK.

New Version 1.8

http://www.4shared.com/file/vUCx4XTv/CHDK1154-sx210is-ASM1989-RCv18.html
compiled with latest trunk 1154, dont know if fixes or crashes anything, but seam to work

Full Source here with ixus1000too:
http://www.4shared.com/file/fwfRXVYZ/sx210-ixus1000asm1989trunk1154.html

I tried this however after enabling both DNG/RAW it still only outputs JPG :(

nevermind, user error: its just that it doesn't display the file when connecting the computer directly to the camera since it stores to a separate folder.  Awesome work btw on this port, looking forward to playing around with it!

you can change in chdk RAW option so it store in same folder.

this is the Bug that is fixed.I test the asm1989 ixus 1000 build, here there is not active the boot crash fix.

Ixus 1000 need a better fix because it crash on series shoot too

But for SX210 it may help if the line
#define   CAM_STARTUP_CRASH_FILE_OPEN_FIX   1

is add in the platform_camera.h file.

If asm1989 have no time, i can too compile Sx210, but i can not test it.let me know if i should do a port.
But better is if somebody with more knowledge than me merge the Sx210 and IX1000 Ports in the offical source.

asm1989 seem have no time to keep the SX210 Port good upto date.
And i miss knowledge and time to keep it upto date too.

@Bernd R

Please, compile it for the sx210 and I'll test it ASAP

Thanks!

I'd like to see this port updated too.
I have one question. Can someone explain me what is needed for this port to be merged to the official source?
It's a matter of completing some missing features? It's the port not considered mature enough for inclusion? Or the problem is that somebody with the knowledge is needed to spend a lot of time doing it?

I apologize for not having read the whole 31 page thread yet, but I'm curious to know if there is a stable port that will enable me to take RAW images on a SX210IS.  I'm in the middle of doing field work, and I cannot come back and reshoot my areas, so I absolutely cannot have corrupted files or a crashed camera.  RAW would be great for my application (I want to conduct an automated classification on my images when I get back to the lab), but I'll live with JPG if I can't do RAW safely.  I'm reasonably comfortable with the idea of CHDK, but my technician isn't as tech-savvy as I am, so it needs to be simple so she's not confused.

Basically, is this software at the point where I can trust it not to fail on me and lose my critical data?  All I need it to do is shoot custom timer shots of vegetation in RAW or TIFF format.

Thanks for your help!

Very interested in all of this as well!

I've noticed it's too hard to get a hold of a Canon SX200 IS, and the main reason I'd like this one because of less megapixels and the option to add the CHDK mod... But if it proves too hard, I'll have to get a SX210.

I have taken several pictures in DNG format with several beta versions from this post (last one tested was RCv17, I'd like to try RCv18 soon), and so far I haven't got any problems, once the badpixel.bin file is created.
This seems to be the greatest source of problems since I feel is not well explained (Maybe it's me, but I don't even know if my badpixel.bin file is correctly created).
CHDK can be easily configured to take both jpeg and DNG simultaneously, so you can have both in case for some reason you can't use the DNGs. A fast SD Card is recommended since DNG creation takes some time though.
So, I would suggest you to try it. You can always choose to load or not CHDK when you switch the camera on, and it's easy to uninstall it if it doesn't work for you.

Crashing is always possible, and can occasionally lead to filesystem corruption and lost data. In my experience this is rare.

If you absolutely cannot accept having the camera crash, I would suggest not using CHDK, unless you have personally verified that it is sufficiently stable with your specific camera in your specific usage. It's a hack, every camera is different, the possibility of unforeseen problems is always present.

It's considered for inclusion for when the developer doing the port posts it in http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=650.315

The source can be added at any stage. To be enabled in the autobuild, it should be reasonably functional. There isn't any specific definition, if the developer thinks it's ready, that's good enough for me.

I've got one more question, if I may:

I bought the SX210 IS and I've got an issue with the focus and exposure when taking a timed shot.  The camera appears to be assessing the correct focus and exposure when I press the shutter release to start the timer.  However, I am subsequently raising the camera up onto a pole and into an elevated position, so the exposure and focus are not correct for the position the camera is in when the photo is snapped.  Can CHDK make the camera wait to take the exposure and set the auto focus right before the timer goes off?

Modifying the way the canon timer works would probably be difficult, but getting the same effect with a CHDK script should be pretty trivial.

Basically all it would need to do is (untested, lua)
Code: [Select]
--[[
@param a time in sec
@default a 5
]]
sleep(a*1000)
shoot()

If you want to do bracketed shots or whatever it would obviously get more complex...
