Did I say that you guys, waterwingz and philmoz, are wizards? *bows*  :D
philmoz may very well be a wizard.  I'm more like the appretice character played by Mickey Mouse in that fantasia movie ...

This E version works for me but it takes two pictures with one trigger:
1. USB power ON, OFF -> Auto focus
2. USB power ON, OFF again -> Takes a picture
3. Green LED on back blinks for 10 seconds (counted on a computer clock) and then takes another picture.
Probably need a bit more information here.  What are you using to trigger the USB port ?  What settings are you using for each of the option on the Remote parameters menu ?

Enable Remote [ * ]
Enable Synchable Remote [ * ]
Enable Synch [ ]

i.e. first two checked, last unchecked. Rest all are default.

And I am using a wall wart USB power supply (or a computer USB port) and manually plugging in/out the USB cable to do the switching. The power supply is ON all the time.

I fished around for a switch to make a "real" remote cable but didn't find any handy.

The current code has some "interesting" behaviour.  Give me some idea of how long you connected for,  how long you disconnected and how long you did the second connection for ?

Tried this for a while too but got frustrated with getting the timing right. Plugging and unplugging a USB connector was just too hard.

Yes, it is hard and with very un-repeatable timings. I'll find/buy a switch tomorrow and then retry.

Oh!  Yes, that is what I meant - his version is working with no lag.
So what do you plan to do with some many cameras ?

It's a little bit of a top-secret experiment, but along the lines of Matrix-style bullet time.  There's a lot of cool technology for extracting 3D models from multiple camera angles.  I have lots of ideas to try - I just have to solder up a bunch more power>usb cables and set them all up!

Very cool! Their frozen light streak shots are my favorite.

I have CHDK working fine on my A490 with a small SD card (256MB). But I can't get it to run on a large card (8GB). I read chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Bootable_SD_card and downloaded common_files.zip from http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/download.htm and ran sdminste.exe from it. There I set up two partitions, formatted one as FAT12, the other as FAT32, made the FAT12 partition bootable, copied DISKBOOT.BIN to the FAT12 partition and the rest of the A490 CHDK files and folders to the FAT32 partition (using sdminste.exe to swap between the partitions). Finally, I made sure the FAT12 partition was partition1, locked the SD card, put it in the A490 and try to power the camera on. But nothing happens. I tested the above with this release: a490-100d-1.0.0-1530-full_BETA .

Are 8GB cards currently not working in CHDK for A490? Or am I missing something in the steps above?

Edit: I went back to a490-100f-0.9.9-1351-full_BETA . Working now.

update: the cause of my problem with 1.0.0 was that I used version D on my version F camera. a490-100f-1.0.0-1545-full_BETA.zip works fine with a two partition 8GB card.

Okay, I tried with a switch but got same symptoms. I switch on momentarily (i.e. a fraction of a second) both for autofocus and for shutter release. Camera takes two pictures with about 10 second interval between them. Repeatedly got the same results with both A490s I have.
