The mood is for the Canon Elph 300 HS. Yes, it uses the NB-4L battery. I was planning on asking the question you just answered for me. I guess 5v is too high then?

The problem is, I want a battery source that is not going to require me doing electrical modification as I have no electrical experience. What can you suggest I buy that I can plug directly into the DC coupler that will give out 3.7V, besides the mains connection?

Connecting any power source other than original is a little bit risky.
Doing this without any experience might be risky even more.

What do you need is any power supply that can give you 3-3.5 V at at least 2 A. Maybe some phone power supply or other device power adapter with appropriate current parameters. If you don't know anything about current just search for adapter, that gives you exactly what you need.

Also - check carefully, which pole is negative and which is positive.

The specs are almost right and it looks like it should all plug together correctly.  The weakest link is the Vivanco CPA3 DC/DC Car Power Adapter.   The 3V setting might work - the 4.5V is still a little too "hot".    And as mentioned above,  you need to be sure that the polarity is correct when it comes out of the HQRP Battery DC Coupler.

The rated output from the power supply that plugs into the DC-10 Coulpler is 4.3 V DC, 1.5 A. I got this from canon's website; http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8201057400.html

The cheap versions of this Coupler's power supply also ouputs the same; 4.3 V DC, 1.5 A. Seen in the picture here

I'm assuming that It should be 'safe' to use a 4.5v into the DC coupler then.

In theory, is it possible to just insert 3or4 AA 1.2v batteries [output 3.6-4.8v] into a battery holder[series] wired to a DC plug/pin?


It wouldn't give the same mAh capacity as a parallel configuration. But this battery pack can be put together without having to solder any wires. All the parts can be bought and assembled by a novice like myself.



Connect a DC Female to Male adapter to fit into DC Coupler DC-10.


Anyone know the diameter (mm) of the DC tip that connects into DC 10 (ACK-DC10) coupler?

Meanwhile, I bought the Vianco DC/DC adapter, I will test it in a car as soon as the DC Coupler arrives.

I was faced with putting together an external battery pack for my SD600.  I've been using a 3 cell version of http://tinyurl.com/7uo8qp6 for a while now, works great.  I can do 12+ hours of time lapse (3 sec interval) easily.

But that battery pack weighs 5.1oz, and I'd like something lighter for backpacking. 

I tried a 3 AAA battery holder, with alkaline batteries (4.5V).  It worked, but not as long as I had expected.  About 4 hours.  So I just tried 3 lithium AAA batteries; voltage should be around 5.1V, as new lithium AA or AAA are about 1.7V.  It worked!  (I have a couple extra SD600 cameras, so I wasn't too concerned if I fried it)  The SD600 normally takes a NB-4L internal battery

The time lapse is running right now, about 5 hours duration right now.  Cut my weight from 5.1oz to 1.2oz, albeit with a smaller run time, but another set of AAA would be 1oz.

I've had to buy a couple AC power adapters, as the dummy battery doesn't always hold up and I'm cutting off the power plug for the battery.
