When I had my A650 IS repaired by Canon, they reset the numbering back to 0001.  Canon support tells me tough luck, there is no way to change that number so I can stay in sequence with the previous photo's I had taken.

Is resetting the internal numbering something that CHKD could do through the menu selections?

ISTR the camera will continue from the highest number image on the card.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

@jojo99:
Read your camera's manual, page 128: "Resetting the File Number" ;)

A number one higher than the last one recorded is assigned
to the next image. This is convenient for managing all your
images together on a computer because you avoid file name
duplication when changing folders or memory cards.*

*When a blank memory card is used. If a memory card with recorded
data is used, the 7-digit number for the last recorded folder and
image is compared with the last one on the memory card, and the
larger of the two is utilized as the basis for new images.

After I take a set of photo's, I MOVE all photo's OFF of the card, so there aren't any images to number off of.

I do not understand this.

1. As I stated above, there are no remaining images on the card because the images have been moved to the PC.

2. For your part 2, what 7 digit number is being talked about?  I have a "DCIM" folder and a 100CANON folder underneath on the card (besides the CHDK folders and files under "CHDK".  I don't see any 7 digit numbers on the card.

So put the highest number image back on the card.

And then keep leaving the highest number image on the SD card?  That's a pretty poor way to manage the problem.  Which is why I asked if something could be added to CHDK.

Canon MUST have something set internally.  When you first buy the camera, you need do nothing.  The camera automatically increments the image numbers.  AND even if you move all the images off the card, Canon still remembers the next number to assign.

In your camera menu, you can choose if you want to keep the number sequence or start with 0 again every time you insert the card.

File Numbering, "Auto Reset" or "Continuous"
Like FE50 said, read the manual.

i'm sure the number can be set via chdk but needs additional code of course. however i would not advocate such code, as it could be used to manipulate the counter of cameras that are meant to be sold on ebay (for example).
Question: Why is it that important to keep the images in sequence? do you put them all in one folder?

A little less snark would be a good thing.  Of course I read the FM before I posted this!  And as I stated, I also talked to Canon support.

I DO HAVE the menu item set to CONTINUOUS.  And it does work, except that it started from 0001 again after Canon repaired the camera.
