well, if canon really wanted to shut us down by encrypting whatever the new models, the more publicity will do no harm. if at all, it will perhaps draw more developers to the project

maybe a sympathetic Canon engineer ?

I'm sure it is possible to detach flash memory chip to extract dump/keys etc.
time to donate money to some electronics guy.

The flash memory is part of the Digic package, so this could be quite challenging. See http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english/NEWS_EN/20090217/165748/
Don't forget what the H stands for.

CHDK makes it to CBS on "The Early Show" (as CDHK)

On CBS's "The Early Show" today they featured a segment called "Shooting for the Stars". Some guy named Colin Rich from Los Angeles did another high-altitude weather-balloon project with CHDK. He's acting as if he thought of it all by himself and that it's never been done before. He also called CHDK as CDHK during the interview and CBS even quoted him in text on the screen as CDHK. :) Kind of neat to see CHDK being featured on a major TV network now, but the whole interview is rather humorous to anyone that already knows all the history of what people have done with CHDK. The interviewer even asked him at the end to contact BP, after his amazing discovery of how to do this balloon photography feat with "CDHK" maybe he can help them plug the oil leak too.  :lol :haha

I couldn't find the segment posted on CBS's "The Early Show" website yet, but maybe someone can find it later. You'll have to hunt CBS for "CDHK" and not "CHDK".  :lol :haha

I think Cannon will encrypt everything soon. Earlier today I sent this email to Customer Care:

Quote
I am a happy owner of a SX10 IS, and I want to express my concern about the latest Cannon cameras and CHDK.
When I purchased my Cannon last year, I *ONLY* choose a Cannon *BECAUSE OF* CHDK. The price and features of a similar Nikon model were better, but despite of this, I choose a Cannon.
I don't know if this will change anything, but please don't try to lock down your products. CHDK is a beautiful product, and I personally know a bunch of people that got a Cannon after I told and showed them the powers of a Cannon loaded with CHDK scripts.
I will not buy another Cannon unless I can see on CHDK website that the new model is compatible, because a Cannon without it loses a lot of fun.
Thanks for my camera, and play nice with CHDK guys, they are awesome and they are making your cameras even better.

I don't know if this will help, but I think if A LOT of people says the same, maybe we can change Cannon minds.
