Using the AF lock feature my camera make four clicks per picture. Is that normal?

Using my A590is, I find that using aflock (which this script does) results in lots of mechanical noise, more than when using manual focus. So I decided to stick with manual focus, and replace batteries more often.  I don't know that it really matters, but when taking thousands of pictures, I just wanted to minimize the mechanical stuff as much as possible.

It's not clear why the mechanical stuff occurs with aflock.  It's as though it goes through the whole focusing operation, then just ignoes the result and uses the previous setting.  With manual focus, it appears to just [admin: avoid swearing please] the shutter, then trigger it - no motors.

Thanks - I'll give MF a try if it works with my camera.

Update: I just played with my camera a bit and it makes two clicks for a picture and two clicks for the ND filter turned on and off. That equals four clicks per picture.

As a side note - if I enable AE Lock and start a script then CHDK freezes the camera.
