I was turned on to CHDK by a friend and started to read. The first thing to catch my eye was motion detection shots. Unless I didnt read everything or undertand everything, the camera always is turned on? Well I was wondering if there is a way that you can have the camera off. I would assume you would need to do some kind of hardware hack? The reason I ask is because I would like to use this as a trail camera. I know there are already forums and circutboards made to do this. However the information is not as easy to find as the information on here. So I was wondering if anyone has ever made a camera that senses motion and then powers on the camera takes a pic and powers off.

Like I said I know there are kits out there to hack cameras but Im looking for an easier way to do this mainly by software

If you tape-down the power button and use a battery-operated PIR (passive infra-red) detector to connect an external power-source to the camera, the camera will then boot.

An autostart script can then take a photo.

There will be a few seconds delay.

Cannot remember if you can power-down the camera from a  CHDK script.

Dont most cameras shut off after a specific ammount of time of inactivity

What a shame. I was hoping to offer to use my camera as a detection device for my crazy neighbor that is convinced that an old neighbor that hasn't lived here for years is ringing her doorbell at all hours of the night.
EDIT : I forgot to mention that she had a switch out on the doorbell speaker so it CAN NOT ring at all, yet she still hears it every night.
