The A480 was relatively recently supported and I know as a new user I wasn't sure if it had access to some of the CHDK features seeing as how cheap it is. It does. So I've made a quick start guide specifically for this camera:

Hmm, does it have to be in a certain canon mode before manual focus works?  Have followed your guide but the zoom buttons dont adjust the focus at all, nothing happens.

I have had it work before, but it just doesnt seem to do anything the last few times i've tried

I had it in "P" mode. Let me know if that doesn't help.

Also try zooming first before turning on the subject distance override.

One thing that tripped me up with the manual focus is that it is only obvious that it is working over a fairly small range of focal lengths. It doesn't take much to end up with infinity. Try playing with it in macro mode and just 100mm from the subject.

Hmm, i can be fully focused up close in Macro, turn on the Alt Manual Focus, press one of the zoom buttons and bosh, it throws it out of focus, then the zoom buttons dont do anything again after that first press.

That is exactly what happened to me that caused me to think it isn't working. But it is.

I think there is a bug in how it works. When you turn SD override on it doesn't matter what the initial value is, that value isn't applied. So the current focal length is kept.

As soon as you nudge it one way or the other it will go out of focus because your subject is neither of those distances from the lens.

Set the SD override to 100. Set the SD factor to 1. Hold the camera roughly 100mm from an object. Focus. Then hold down the zoom button so it goes down 99, 98, 97, etc. The object should gradually go out of focus. If you then hold the other zoom button it should gradually come back into focus.

I made a video for you demonstrating how it works:
