Problem is .. there is no code that I can check because others report it works fine.

You are saying the CHDK folder is created but there are no subfolders in it ?

That is a very specific location in the boot code and it is impossible to understand why the firmware function 'mkdir'  (make directory) fails at that point.

Hi David
No, what I mean is I  can make a CHDK bootable or SDM bootable on either the CardTricks or the SDM program & the both load on to the SD card OK. It is just the CHDK that loads properly into the camera.

I have ordered a copy of that book on Canon Hacks, so in about a week or two I will have another reference to refer to, & some different explaining & pics to guide me ??
It has some on both CHDK & SDM in it.
Cheers
Col

Yes, David
zeno said in his reply #92
"It sounds to me as though somewhere on the card you have another file (eg a CFG file) that is causing the problems. Eliminating all files except DISKBOOT.BIN will clear this up. SDM will start up perfectly well with just DISKBOOT.BIN. "
I replied in reply #93
"zeno that is correct, only the DISKBOOT.BIN file. After it is Loaded, flashed 1.84, crashed & shut down the camera, there appears on the SD card a folder that is empty, CHDK.
I have been deleting this."
This CHDK folder is empty, it was not on the SD card before it went into the camera, but appears when I take the card out, after the camera has crashed & turned off.

and I just asked "You are saying the CHDK folder is created but there are no subfolders in it ?"

and you replied "No, what I mean is .."

It would seem my reply 100 (!) comment is valid.

After the camera has booted, there is a built-in short delay and then the configuration values are loaded.

The PRINT led will briefly flash ... does it ?

The graphical user interface code is initialised and (on SDM) so is motion-detection.

The CHDK folder is created and at this point your camera crashes.

The subfolders of CHDK are then created.

No SDM or CHDK code is involved in the folder creation, it is done by the Canon firmware function.

The address of that function is correct.

It is impossible to explain why this fails.

Sorry David, I misunderstood you.
Yes, with the SDM's DISKBOOT.BIN there appears an empty folder named CHDK that is empty.
This empty folder named CHDK only appears after I try loading the SDM's DISKBOOT.BIN into the camera. It isn't there when I create the SDM's DISKBOOT.BIN on the SD card.

Hi David
Yes, the PRINT LED does flash.
With the SDM BOOT.BIN SD card inserted.
In quick succession the Canon screen flashes, the PRINT LED flashes & then 1.84 flashes on, then the camera crashes.

If you right-click on DISKBOOT.BIN and choose Properties, what is the file size in bytes ?
