I want to start this thread and hoping that there are skillful programmers out there who would take on Sony's NEXes. These cameras scream for a hack (no manual control in video, worst interface/menue ever, etc.). Since there are Alpha cameras who have been hacked, I wonder what possibilities there are for these compact APS-sensor equipped Alpha compacts like the NEXes?

no big deal, just download its kernel from sony and recompile as needed:

ok, the big deal is probably to get the kernel onto it :)

I have this little camera and indeed ther'are lot of things wrong in the software.
Meanwhile ther's a new firmware available from Sony which added 3d shooting, but the other issues remain.
For example : the NEX3 has 720P recoding , the NEX5 1080i. I guess it must be possible to get 720P on the NEX5 too !!

Hi,
I've happened to come along this thread, though it took me some time ...
Actually, I'm happy that I'm not the only one trying to figure out how to alter this firmware.

I have a question concerning yiha's post:
I downloaded the kernel and read the info on sony's website, but I have no clue how and where I can alter things. There is no obvious file that read: don't mess here, or you kill the software - know what I'm talking about?

I even talked to some programmers here (I'm just amateur to be honest) and neither do they know what these files are supposed to to.

So does anybody of you know how to work this thing? Help very much appreciated!

(The Nex is just a perfect cam for a very special project of mine but it misses some nice remote controll...)

It would be great if someone could create a hack so that in manual mode NEX's control wheel selects shutter speed and the lens's electronic focus ring selects aperture.

Oh. I am now using Sanyo HD DV, and the videos can imported to iPad but cannot be played Thats why I want to move to Sony Nex series. Seems that Nex doesnt compatible with iPad too.
