Yep that is exactly what I have got too.
But the red wire had to go on the left hand terminal of the 2.5 mm female plug.
Cheers

Looking at your picure, the red goes to the RH terminal.
I had to put the red to the LH terminal, ie copper colour & right channel.

I made a small PCB (50x14mm) for a remote with external port.
If anyone is interested, I sell these for US$ 10.- (assembled + batteries but without USB cable)
Worldwide priority airmail shipping is US$ 2.-

If you need plugs to make your own cable, I can include them for US$ 0.70 each

I've just completed a really simple wireless remote, using a 433MHz transmitter/receiver bought on Ebay. The transmitter end is ready-to-use and the receiver board required a few minutes to solder on a USB plug and a socket to plug a 4-cell AAA battery pack. Though they come from Hong Kong, mine arrived in the UK 14 days after ordering - pretty good I thought.

One point worth noting. Though they seem to be momentary push buttons, one press switches on  and the next press switches off - they don't work in a momentary fashion at the receiving end. Thus if you set up SDM or CHDK so that it takes a picture when the 5v signal is removed, that will happen on the second button press.
