I have installed the latest build of CHDK for the PowerShot a480 onto my SDHC card. Locking the card before powering up autostarts CHDK as intended and CHDK appears to work fine. However, I would rather leave the card unlocked and be able to select CHDK when needed. The instructions I can find for entering ALT mode manually on this camera state either pressing the Direct Print button, which does not exist on this model; or pressing MODE for a short period -- however, I am unable to load CHDK using this method, the camera follows the Canon menu functions only.

Does anyone have a working method for entering ALT mode and loading CHDK with autostart disabled?

If you don't autostart CHDK, you must manually load it with the "firm update" method: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/%22firmware_update_method%22

edit:
Once it's loaded, ALT mode is available just the same as if you autostarted.
