Compress DNG files on PC

I have made a lot of DNG-s with CHDK (SX 200), and now I would like to compress the DNG files.
1. What kind of free program can I use for that?
2. Unfortunately, I downloaded the jpegs and the dngs two different ways, so all the pairs of the identical files have different names. What is the easiest way to add the same name to the jpeg and dng files?

You can use Adobe DNG converter and select the option to compress the DNGs.

IMO, the best way to rename your pictures is with the date and time. All your pictures (and I mean ALL) will have a unique name, thus you'll never overwrite them by mistake. You can quickly search for a group of pictures if you remember when you took them, for example certain holyday or birthday. Also you can sort them easily in any operative system.

In your case, you can rename both the JPG and DNG by using exiftool which is a free and powerful application to handle photo meta-data. I use the following command line instruction:

Code: [Select]
C:\apps\exiftool\exiftool * "-FileName<CreateDate" -d %%y%%m%%d_%%H%%M%%S%%%%-c.%%%%e .
This will rename all the files in the current folder with the format YYMMDD_HHMMSS, for example 100731_144047.JPG where the date is 31st of July 2010 and the time 2:47:47pm.
The date and time is extracted from the picture's EXIF data and if you created your DNGs on camera they should have the same date as the JPGs and both will have the same name but different extension.

Have fun.

Adobe DNG converter does not support CHDK raw files as far as I know. I have tried Adobe DNG converter 6.1, and it can not recognise DNG from a Canon SX 200.

Thanks, wontolla, I think that will work with them! :)

Can you share one of your dng's that does not work with adobe dng converter?
I have used it for a long time on dng's created by an a540 and sx110is, both works fine. (On the dng's, not on the raw-files)

Just tested it in adobe dng converter 6.1.0.250 and there it works? Must be some differences somewhere.
Do you get any errors or something from it?

Also, the adobe "dng_validate.exe" works.

Thanks, that sounds good. Actually, the Select button is not active. I have tried a lot of things in the settings, without succes. So, it must be something very silly.

Ah! Choose folder and not file as input! :)

Edit: I do not know why it shows files at all, since input suppose to be folder and not file. It is a little bit stupid.
