What are these keys all about?

I read in the thread at http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=2995.0 that there are some keys that weren't included to avoid a complaint from Canon. What are these keys? It sounds like it's some kind of measure to prevent unofficial firmware from being installed, but why would Canon do this? So many devices require firmware to be digitally signed, and I don't know what for.

Only canon knows for sure, but it's reasonable to assume they are intended to to prevent people from making their own firmware updates, or decoding canons.

Yes, but why would Canon have a problem with us making our own firmware updates? It's my camera. And if I accidentally brick my camera in the process (like you thought you did) then hey, more money for them! (new camera)

My guess is they don't care about that, although there could be support costs. More likely, they don't want competitors taking advantage of their R&D. The consumer camera market is very competitive, and margins are thin.
