The Total Shoot -related counter is even worse, as it doesn't update after shots. :/

@ewavr
Gotcha!, but Jucifer asked for some figure that increases without changing mode. Parameter #1 in S3 is in fact the number of total shots matching the vers.req information.
If I'm not mistaking, we can use the get_file_counter() figure. (Unless we rename the folder while a script is executing.  :) )

Interesting IDA lesson, it reminds me microcontroller programming. Although I understand a little of this, I bet I'll never be able to discover what you guys find in there.

Well you could also use the get_jpg_counter...

Actually that counter doesn't quite work, as mentioned in

Bracketing series (for example for timelapse HDR)

this thread, which is the reason I'm (personally) pursuing this other route.

@all
Param 2 on ixus70 seems to be total shots at all because its about the same number as the file name. It also increases by 1 when i take a movie.

it should be reset when the internal battery is low on voltage.
I am having trouble with my internal battery on my A720is.  The clock has reset several times, seemingly randomly, but often overnight.  At any rate I have removed the CR1220 battery (is this the "internal battery" you mention?) several times and the total shot number was retained, as well as latest error codes.  For instance once I once had an obstruction (my hand) prevent the lens from opening.  So the camera reports an E18 error.

Anyone else have a problem with the date resetting on the A720?

Yes, my 4+ month old A720 randomly looses the date too (about 10 times so far)... My guess is poor contact with the battery (weak springs/contacts, or just not designed correctly)?

Has not be worth sending it back for repair (at least yet).

@BB

Yoy probably already know/did this, but if not:

Try cleaning the battery contact points in the cam and on the batteries with a pencil eraser
and/or a Q-tip and alcohol
A sometimes useful trick for battery operated devices, especially if you expect grease/dirt
to be cause of the problem. Less invasive for the camera than bending contacts (but be sure
to vacuum out any rubber particles afterwards)
