Is there any way CHDK could have a feature where you take pictures at different exposures, then open the file browser and merge the photos to an HDR image without needing to use a computer? That would be very convenient.

Yes and no. It's probably physically possible, but it would be very slow and/or result in very low quality compared to what you get on a real computer with sufficient computing resources and a better display for checking the result.

FWIW - there's also the CHDK RAW merge feature, not for HDR, but maybe useful for you...
