I didn't have a GPS on-board so I don't know the maximum altitude.

Can you share the script you used to shoot video, please? Also, how did you initiate the video script? Can you do this remotely?

Hi Aggi.

For the aerial flights I did last year I used a 2GB SD memory card with my CHDK powered Canon Powershot camera for simplicity. I would download the photos and video to my laptop between flights. This meant that I didn't need a script for extended video duration because the card would fill up before the recording would hit the file size barrier.

This summer I will probably look into writing a script to shoot multiple video clips. It should be possible to turn video recording on / off from a script that is controlled by a small 8-bit microcontroller that would also connect to a PPM R/C control channel on the airplane.

@andrewhazelden :  nice one - once again !

Makes me ashamed about my Easystar still sitting in pieces.  Spent my limited flying time on my microhelicopter - no way that thing is going to lift a P&S camera !

One thing slowing me down is finding somewhere to fly.  It seems there are a ton of regulation about where about where you can't fly.  I suspect this is more aimed at gas engines rather than electric due to the noise.  And probably some concern about property damage  or small children being injured during a crash.  There are flying clubs within 2 hour drives who have fields available.   I guess I need to pay the fees and go that route to get good enough to risk free-lance photo flights like you have posted.

Your microhelicopter comment reminds me of an experiment I did with a Walkera Twister Coaxial model helicopter. After I had done everything I could think of with the tiny heicopter I wanted to see what would happen if I powered the helicopter off a higher voltage battery.

I strapped a 3S 500mAh LiPo battery to the helicopter and the helicopter's brushed motor had just enough output that it could (briefly) lift a Canon Powershot camera. The only downside was the recorded video was quite shakey due to the rigid mounting of the camera to the helicopter fuselage.

I'm sure the helicopter would have been able to hoover longer with the camera if it had a brushless motor.

That is so cool - I'm still laughing at the pictures.  It goes into my "overconfidence" file for sure !

If you used an intervalometer and went for maximum ISO / shutter speed, do you think that (plus the cams image stabilization) would have given you better pictures ?

(My microcopter is of coarse smaller than yours.  But in thinking about upgrading at some point, this has given me a new target).

For my next model aircraft I'm thinking about getting a Multiplex Funcopter v2. I think it would be a great model for use as an electric helicopter based aerial imaging platform.

Over the last few years I have been really happy with using Multiplex model airplanes for aerial photography. I have enjoyed flying both the EasyStar and Twinstar models with Canon Powershots.
