Trying to run CHDK on an A1100 IS

I'm trying to try out the CHDK for the A1100 IS.  I realize it's in development, not complete.  In the porting thread,  I've found links there to several versions of DISKBOOT.BIN and one PS.fi2 file.

I'm confused by whether I need the ps.fi2 file or not, whether the SD card should be locked or not, or bootable or not, and what I should see when I start the camera.  I was able to determine the correct firmware version on my camera (1.00c).  My SD card I'm testing with is an old, 128 MB one, in case that's relevent.

There seem to be two ways to install/use CHDK, but I can't tell which instructions go with which way.

Others in the porting thread have said that the ps.fi2 file makes their camera go black, and that's what I see when I try the (I think) firmware update method, but they also say the diskboot.bin works otherwise.  Sometimes I get a very brief CHDK splash screen but I don't see anything otherwise that indicates it's running.

How do I run CHDK without using ps.fi2?  What should I see when I do?

I should mention, when I have a ps.fi12 file, I have the "update firmware" menu item, but if I only have diskboot.bin, I've never had that menu item.

Also, in the porting thread, TImich wanted an "unencoded diskboot".  When I use the ps.fi2, do I have to use that diskboot.bin?  Do I have to not use it, and use an "encoded diskboot" instead?

The DISKBOOT.BIN and PS.Fi2 are two completely independent copies of CHDK, with different file formats.

DISKBOOT.BIN used to automatically load CHDK when the camera starts. PS.FI2 is used to manually load CHDK once, using "firm update". This is NOT actually a firmware update, when you next restart CHDK, you would have to load it again.

The PS.FI2 is made from an un-encoded DISKBOOT.BIN. To be bootable on most DryOS cameras, DISKBOOT.BIN needs to be encoded.
Don't forget what the H stands for.
