Pictures from altitudes up to 500m from a kite-borne A550 running the ultra intervalometer script. I set it to take an image every six seconds for 20 minutes. The camera suspension was just two lines attached to the kite line. Next time, I'll force a fast exposure. Most of the images are blurred.

You'd do better using a picavet suspension - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kite_aerial_photography

You'll get many more sharp photos that way.

Yes, that's next on the list of things to do. Although my aim there was to get some stability in where the camera was pointing. Good to know it will help with sharpness.

About to start 'KAPing' and hit on this idea - why not adapt a motion detector script to take photos when the image is STEADY - should be a piece of cake!

I guess you mean SDM's 'shoot_when_no_movement_for' command :-

It says "This is intended for longer time-scales than the 'shoot_when_camera_steady' command and takes a photo when there has been no subject movement for a defined amount of time.
Possible applications include kite aerial photography and microscopy."

I think, that it will be hard to achieve steadiness of the KAP camera, because of swinging effect of the lines and its randomness. More you achieve setting short shutter time (adapting it to the light conditions), than trying to detect no movement.
But it is only my guess. Someone tried to use one of these commands with SDM?

Note that the image stabilisation facility on many Canons should be turned OFF - it's just not designed to cope with the sort of movements a KAP camera undergoes. Similarly turning off autofocus (and setting it manually to long distance) will avoid the camera focussing and then, by the time the photo is taken, being out of focus).

I'm scared of SDM, so think I'll just adapt an MD script and set my focus to landscape.

I guess lots of light and a fast shutter speed would also be good, so maybe combining this with some adapted script to maintain a large aperture and fast shutter speed would work best....?
