Well, I thought (and hoped) that the point was to move the focus control from the awkward left/right buttons to the more convenient zoom control. Must have misunderstood, then, but the manual (page 42, bottom) says quite clearly: "For a more precise adjustment of manual focus". As far as I understand it this means a more precise adjustment than the one which is already there. Because that is more or less useless.
