Deformed EXIF info on SX110 IS

Hey all,

I'm a big fan of CHDK, especially for enabling long movies and exposures.

Anywho, I have had a Canon SX110 IS for two years, and it has been amazing. But with pictures taken after August 23rd, the camera has been unable to show picture info (it shows nothing where the info should be, and a question mark in the lower left corner of the screen), and Picasa reads the Camera as "C'Jon C'fo PowerShot SP!10 I?" instead of "Canon PowerShot SX110 IS". I have taken pictures with or without CHDK running or on the card, and it doesn't affect the problem.

Any ideas as to how this came about and how to fix it? Thanks for any suggestions.

The first and easiest thing to try that I can think of is to format the memory card or try a different one.

Getting a parameters dump and a firmware dump to compare them to ones from a working camera could be fruitful too.

I've used 5 memory cards since it started happening, ranging from 512MB to 8GB, and the problem still occurs.

I'm not familiar with dumping parameters or firmware, could you provide me a link? Also, I don't have another SX110, but if someone who has one would be willing to dump their's also, that would be awesome.

Thanks, and I hope I can fix this!

Have you tried a "reset all..." in the canon menu ?

"Jon C" looks like someones name. There is a setting on the cameras where canon utilities can store the owner name. Do you know if anything like this has been done on this camera ?
Don't forget what the H stands for.

Canon service should be able to reset the camera name, if the ROM isn't defective.

We also can read/write camera name using Get(Set)ParameterData() function - using custom CHDK build or even CBasic script.

@bencahill: Go to Misc menu-> Debug -> Show Parameter Data = on, PopCase/ParamsData page = 0, then exit <alt> menu and read parameter #4 from screen, this must be camera name.

Here is a new development:

The camera also (I just noticed) doesn't play videos any more, i.e. I click FUNC/SET on a video in playback mode, and it doesn't do anything (it should bring up the video menu, where you can play). It's not the FUNC/SET button itself, as it works fine in other modes.

One possibility for this behavior is that the camera writes its name to each video you shoot with it and now that the name is corrupted it doesn't match the tag from older video files any more, making the camera assume it shouldn't be playing them at all. So, are you able to play new videos or old videos (recorded now as opposed to ones before name corruption?).

But try that thing ewavr said above...

@fudgey
Unfortunately I can't try this, because I delete the .THM files once I put the videos on the computer, therefore rendering them unreadable by the camera. I would think this is the case, however, that the camera puts the wrong name in the file, and then can't read it.

@ewavr
Here's all of the lines from that screens, if it helps:
0: 1 : 1
1: 4033 : 4
2: 9701 : 4
3: C`Jon : 6
4: C`fo. PowerShot SP!10 I!! : 32
5: Codment : 30
6: 1 : 2
7:  :32
8:  :16
9: 2000 : 4
