Autoload possible without SD-lock?

So here's my problem; The locking 'feature' on my camera (S2 IS) is quite broken.... With the card locked i can shoot pictures, movies, delete stuff and format my card. This happens with all my SD-cards (mostly Sandisks). I've looked into the camera and its all nice an clean, I prodded the little lock-reading-nipple-thingy with a toothpick and it gives like i feel it should, so it should be able to detect the setting on the card but it doesn't so i've declared the switch broken.

Now my question is simple; Is there a way to make my camera autoload without using this locking mechanism?

Nope. The canon firmware uses the SD card lock to decide whether to autoload, and obviously CHDK can't change this before it's loaded. We're good, but not that good :)

You could presumably open up your camera and short (or open, whichever it's supposed to be...) the switch permanently I guess.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

Maybe if i get sick enough of starting it up by hand all the time ill try opening it up but thats really a last resort for me... Never opened up a digital camera before but i did some work on my OM-2 every now and then. Im just worried all the electric guts will spill all over the table and i wont be able to get it back together again because i cant see how electronics work like i can with mechanical cameras..

You can find some teardown pictures of powershots on the internet, and it doesn't look exactly trivial.

I did make a loader that uses canon basic instead of firm update http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,5648.msg54860.html#msg54860 but you still have to start in play mode press "func" to load it. You'd also have to do a bit of hacking so it wouldn't reboot every time you pressed func after loading chdk...

There may be a way to automatically run canon basic, but if so, no one has figured it out yet. The string "autotest.m" in the firmware is suggestive...

Well, that canon basic stuff just looks awfully complicated to me and since i had some spare time i decided i'd go through with the disassembly thing. I couldn't find any proper instructions on the interweb so i just started to see how far i could get. So i took all the screws out (why o why do they have use two different types of screws all different in length?) and tried to get all the plastic off but i failed horribly... i could only pry it all off the body for about a multimeter or 2! Even with everything unscrewed its still all snapped together somehow and i was too afraid to break something so i just pressed it all back into place and put all the screws back in and and as i turned it back on started praying it still worked ok.... and guess what:

Card locked!

I'm sorry? I didn't really do anything and now all of a sudden it decides to function properly? So i enabled the autoboot feature and it now all work like it should!!

So for now my problem is solved! If it ever decides to [admin: avoid swearing please] out on me again then maybe ill give the canon basic thing a try but for now im all set!
