USB WIFI DONGLE - Tethered Wireless Shooting

Facts :

- Dedicated wifi modules for Canon and Nikon are VERY expensive - USD 750.00 to 800.00 (whew)
- DSLR's have 5 pin connectors (usually) used to connect to laptop and PC's
- USB wifi dongles are CHEAP ! (the 802.11 g or b or n variety)

Question :

- Is it possible to write a CF card script that will a) activate the WIFI dongle b) assign the necessary IP addresses c) detect and connect to predefined wifi networks ?

WHY would I want that?

I want to use DSLR Remote Pro to do tethered shooting without all the cabling and NOT break the bank.

Cheers and thanks for your replies.

No!

Cameras are not capable of acting as USB hosts, which is a requirement to be able to interface with a dongle (or any other USB device).

Is what I'm suggesting very different from the Eye Fi technology which are SD cards that are equipped with wifi antennas and the software that runs the transceiver?  link : http://www.eye.fi/how-it-works/basics

This technology already exists but I'm unable to use it because my camera is not supported (Canon EOS 10D - ancient hehe).

Also, there are working rigs using WUSB (Certified Wireless USB) instead of 802.11 g-b-n technology.

The downside with this set-up is that they don't ship these WUSB gadgets to my country (Philippines).

SO, this post is exploratory in the hopes of finding a work-around using wifi USB dongles. My premise is a camera does have a processor to run it's firmware so, maybe .... if the script is written on a CF card, it may get wifi functionality.

Again cheers !

An equally simple reply is that DSLR's are not supported by CHDK.

The best that you can do is use one of the CHDK-supported cameras with a wireless USB link and BreezeBrowser (if the camera is supported) or the experimental CHDK PTP feature.

If you cannot 'obtain' by some means the wireless USB devices I think you are out of luck.

Yes, it is completely different, because the camera just sees eyefi as a normal SD card.

Given sufficient resources, you could make custom hardware that does the same thing in a CF form factor, but this has nothing to do hacking the camera firmware never mind a "script", and probably isn't within reach of most hobbyists.

Again, nothing on the camera side is changed with these things. The camera thinks it is connected to a regular USB cord. All custom, external hardware, no camera hacking.

That sounds like a solvable problem.

As david says, this whole topic also has nothing to do with CHDK, because CHDK does not exist on DSLRs, and almost certainly never will.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

Hello - this may be pure speculation here:
If you have an SD slot on your camera, you may consider eye-fi SD card.
The price of which seems reasonable: http://www.eye.fi/where-to-buy

If you have a CF slot, you may want to try to get on ebay one of those SD to CF adaptor.

I never try any of those though.

For some reason the 8 gb is cheaper than the 4 gb at amazon:

There are other Chinese clones on ebay, but I am eager to see their cloud system as well, this is one of the coolest inventions I have seen for a while.
Has anyone purchased it or the chinese clones?
I just placed my order I will update when I receive it.
