SX10 IS AF question

Hej,
Today I have tested MD for the first time with my SX10 IS... Disappointment. It just focused all the time at the same spot, center, though it was set onto "face detection" (the script setting was slow, too).
Not sure what I could use to get the same as my A540's AiAF, which was focusing the bird right most of the time.

Whatever setting I chose, the rectangle stays at the center, always. :/// How do you get it to choose alone something else which isn't at the center ?

That is one of the AF options.

Have you tried FlexiZone ?

See page 118 of the manual.

Hej,
Yeah flexizone and the rectangle stays at the center too.
I'll check the manual somehow later on. Thanks for the answer.

*edited* : flexizone is used for manual selection of the zone, so I'm down with face detection as I thought. So it won't work well for birds like the good old AiAF. I need some trick, here. :/

First you need to set the focus method in the camera menu.  When you press MENU (in normal camera mode) it is the first item "AF Frame".  In Auto mode you can choose either "Center", which stays in the center of the frame, or "Face Detect" which uses the face detection feature.  In any other mode, the "Center" becomes "FlexiZone" which has some other options (resize/move)
If you are in any mode but Auto, when in record mode, press the bottom button on the top right corner of the rear of the camera.  This is where you can change the settings for the focus type selected.
In "FlexiZone", you can change from smaller to larger box size with the DISP key, and move it's location on the screen with the directional keys.  The focus spot stays where you put it and tries to focus there.  If you press MENU, it looks for a face and if found, moves the FlexiZone box to that location (face detect doesn't stay active though)
In "Face Detect" mode the focus box looks for and tracks faces.

Hej,
Yes thanks I got all that already, but there is just nothing like my A540 AiAF, which could find the bird alone like face detection but not with faces.
I'll have to use my SX10 IS only with MF for flying birds, I'm afraid. :/

Yes, the SX10 (and maybe also all newer Powershots ?) don't have the AiAF feature anymore.
The "Servo AF" feature doesn't help here since it is also just using the FlexiZone frame, either centered or set manually...  >:(

Hej,
That sucks ! face detection works for humans just fine, but it's just useless, I'd rather use the center focus and then lock and then shot with a different framing.
Is there any hope of workaround with CHDK ? I don't think it would be possible, nor easy if possible. But some people here may answer my question better.
Btw today is sunny, and my SX10 will just try catching the birds flying with MF forced at around 30 cm. Results maybe in the appropriate thread later on. ^^
