Oh... I have to say sorry I told that this camera has no temperature sensor for batteries. I just read it a few months ago somewhere in this thread (somebody asked about it before).

Hi guys, I found quite a serious problem with DOF calculator. In  manual focus mode it  always shows  the same Hyperfocal distance  1.43 no matter which aperture I chose.  Only if I half-press the shutter button, the numbers change.

Is it possible to fix it to show the right Hyperfocal distance and not only 1.43?

hoping this is an appropriate place to ask this-

I recently setup and am using the CHDK for the SX 130 so thanks to everyone whos been working on it, so far no issues for me.

But I was wondering how people are dealing with the lens distortion. As I understand it, the camera usually auto corrects this, but the RAW files bypass this step which requires the user to do it. Photoshop CS5 has a Lens correction tool with automated features that allow you to choose your camera model. But the SX130 is not listed, is it possible to get this camera profile? (i dont feel very confident that im doing the best job if i do it manually). Also, should lens correction be done first or last?

How are you dealing with lens distortion?

I use this settings for 28mm EQ35MM  in Camera RAW and I think it works quite good. There is no distortion with different focal length, I think.

I've been experimenting with the "aperture override" feature on this camera, and have found the following (for those interested).
Whilst the camera is zoomed out (minimum zoom), the aperture override allows the following apertures that are greater than the standard F8.0 in the normal firmware (as labelled within CHDK):
F8.97  F10.07  F11.31    Any setting above F11.31 shows no change in depth of field or exposure. I thought this would be the same for the entire zoom range and never gave it any more thought....  I was wrong.

Only recently did I discover that whilst zoomed all the way in (maximum zoom), all apertures all the way to F16 are available!

F8.97  F10.07  F11.31  F12.69  F14.25  F16  :)

Selecting any of these apertures shows a change in depth of field as well as exposure.

However, as you go over F8.0, the image gets progressively softer and softer, with F16 being very soft.
Photographing more distant objects seems to give better results (better sharpness) than pushing the limit with very close objects and F16.

I have not yet tried zoom settings between minumum and maximum with the aperture override... it seems there will be many more combinations available.

I hope this helps people who are interested in similar things  :)

I am trying to learn about metering, does the sx130 give any control over the light sensor? also, what does CHDK provide for adding control over the image sensor?

I am still very shaky over my understanding of controling the image sensor but am trying to learn

Why do you suppose Canon do not enable them ?

It is because they are useless and you are comparing with the apertures on a 35mm camera.

A small sensor digital camera is quite different.

The SX130is f16 is equivalent to f90 on a 35mm camera !!

That is why it is unsharp due to diffraction effects.

Well, the images are quite soft, I agree. But they are still totally usable if you do not need full resolution.
Here is an example at full zoom, ISO 400 and F16 (25% width/height): http://i43.tinypic.com/rsscug.jpg
The DNG image was put into photoshop, all I clicked was the "auto" setting when the Camera Raw window appeared. The small amount of default sharpening was added, like with any Camera Raw image unless you manually turn it off (I did not click any additional sharpening).
I used the maximum F16 in the test image, but could have easily gone for some other setting between F8 and F16, where the image would be sharper. Also, using ISO 80 would have given slightly better results.

To summarize, Im very happy that CHDK has enabled these extra apertures, occasionally they can come in handy according to the effect I want to create. But of course, the settings have their drawbacks and it is up to the photographer to see if the tradeoff is worth it or not depending on the shot. :)

Firstly, thanks to all of you and the efforts put into this parallel CHDK universe. Could it be because of searching for wrong terminology so far, but I can't find any information as to whether the latest CHDK supports "live view", especially for the SX130 model? I know there is a remote control application in the works, but can someone pls. clarify this for me.

Canon stopped providing "live view" functionality for the Powershot product line few years ago (DSLRs only), has this been resolved in the hack for the newer models? And if not can I use some sort of A/D USB converter adapter dongle at least in 320x240 res for live view output capability over USB? There is quite a variety of these dongles, codecs, drivers, which is the most suitable? Anyone has got "Easycap USB Video Capture Adapter DC60" or similar to give it a quick test? Basically, the windows see it as another installed webcam..

To be more specific, I'm looking for this important feature as a tool, which is for instance used a lot in the stop motion software and macro/lab photography in general for live preview of the scene,  while raw/jpgs are being captured/downloaded in the folder.

Thank you very much
