I have almost newest Chdk for my updated 101d. When starting it will always immediately go to replay. touching the shutter-button to go to play. When zero images are there it says "no images". Could this be when for first shootingno write protection was set? Thanks a lot.
Everything you mention is normal behavior for CHDK.  If you hold down the On/OFF button when starting the camera until you hear the lens start to extend,  you can start the camera in shooting mode.

1. sorry i meant 101c.
2. solved-thanks- very clever idea of canon to integrate replay in start-button(short press).

Hmmm .. more like a very clever idea of the CHDK devs - that's not anything that Canon provides.

Hi to all again. Kalimera from Greece!
Well somedays ago i spent another happy day with my sx130 and chdk
Now as an introduction. Some months ago i discussed in another forum about my experience with a compact camera and the use of chdk to capture raws. Well in a way the made fun of me because of all this effort of capturing raws for nothing because according to their opinion
1. canon's jpeg engine makes the most of the raw that can be done (well its not olympus but its descent enough. sharpness, noise, contrast, saturation are very good
2. a compact with such a small sensor adds little headroom in a raw file in order to try and revive clipped highlights like a blown sky or a tottally blown white background behind a person or an object.
well see my tests.

a week ago i saw this beautiful car. the day is sunny hot and a bit dusty so the sky is not tottaly blue. if the sky was tottaly blue maby the results would be far more impressing than now.

i resised images to 800x600
out of camera (sx130) jpeg

the exact raw file that the above jpeg refers to was edited in lightroom. see the result

and some crops to show the results more clearly
camera jpeg

edited raw file

camera jpeg

edited raw file

i added very very little noise reduction in lightroom so more noise appears than in jpeg. i wanted to show the amount of detail that can be preserved in raw. see the car's back lights and especially the red light detail and the yelloy back light as well..

the dynamic range preserved and revived clipped highlights in raw i think is obvious.
The only thing i did in lightroom to revive highlights was to move the highlights selection to -100. i didnt change exposure compensation at all
See the sky in camera jpeg. totally blown and white. After editing raw and reducing only highlights the sky was tottaly revived to its original colour. this was the exact colours of this hot moisty and a bit dusty evening sky

the general colour rendition of the car is different in raw but i think i forgot to select the necessary white balance. anyway i dont think that this ruined my test.

the obvious difference between the jpeg and raw framing is because of the lens correction profile that i chose in lightroom that crops less of the original image so it makes the image look more wide

i am really waiting for your comments.

hope this post helps some of you. i was really happy to make it.

I think you have met the "microfunguy challenge" of showing a RAW image that is better than the corresponding JPEG that comes straight from the camera.

Or at least that's my vote.

Nicely done.

my main goal was not to compare generally the image quality but the dynamic range revive capability.
thats why i didnt add any more sharpening or noise reduction. that's why chroma noise is present in raw edited file. especially sharpening was set to minimun even lower than lightroom default setting.

thank you for the thread u mentioned. i am sure that soon i will post there with an example that shows the image quality and how this can surpass the out of camera jpeg. This isnt an easy fight though. Canon's jpeg engine in terms of denoising and detail isnt so easy to beat according to my experience

This has always been microfunguy's point as well.  It takes a lot of skill, hard work, and a little luck to match the quality of the jpeg image that Canon produces "for free" after every shot.   And you have to do that by hand for every RAW image.  Hardly seems worth all that extra effort just to be almost as good?

However, what you have demonstrated,  and others like philmoz have stated,  is that having a RAW image to work with can be very useful when the subject matter had a lot of dynamic range.  Its still a lot of work but you can avoid blown-out hightlights with image information that would have been lost in the jpeg processing process.

just want to mentione something. has anybody tried the usb remote shutter release function on sx130?

for some strange reason this function never worked on mine. i made 2 different remotes with 2 different press switches because i thougth the cable or the switch was broken but nothing. its like nothing happens.
i used both 3 and 4.5volts. a 3Volt  lr0432 battery +an 1.5v AAA but nothing.  anyway just for curiosity if someone had a similar problem.

today i made one last effort and checked with a powermeter the usb cable and everything was ok so im pretty sure now its my camera problem.

You can use an USB cable to simulate remote trigger.  Please test as posted by waterwingz here: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=10059.msg101293#msg101293

now thats strange. usb cable connected on pc works ok. the camera focuses and takes a photo when i remove it.
but again when using batteries and  the handmade cable and switch, nothing happens no matter what batteries it doesnt respond. 3 or 4.5 volt checked with a powermeter.
