Yes, after retirement in 3 months, you could certainly learn programming.

I myself do not know C or C++ well enough to do anything except break stuff, but by the time you learned how to get the lines to appear, you will have gained a great skill.  If, in fact you figured out how to get past the 10 minute limit, lots of people would say "thanks!", and you will know that you actually changed the world.

There are a whole batch of people that know how CHDK works, but only a few have taken the time to get to know it intimately.  And like everything else, they are always learning something new.

HOWEVER, I did get a hint from someone that the reversi lines may actually be fixed soon.  There is still a chance you will be able to relax after you retire.  :)
Don't let the sands of time get in your lunch.

I have copied the 'game colors' fix from CHDK-DE.
Should be all good once version 1323 arrives on the autobuild server.

I didn't do any of the work on this, I just copied the fix done by the CHDK-DE developers.
Since it's a question that keeps coming up I thought it would be simpler to just copy the fix across instead of answering the question over and over ;)

Also how many years would it take to discover how to cancel the 10 minute limit of HD video?
None, but you would need a developer who has access to this model to do the necessary changes and tests. Increased recording time limit is not part of current CHDK (aside from my ports, but that's a different story).

Thanks Philmoz, have about wore out the buttons on my s2 and a650 playing Reversi.  Kind of a shame for such nice cameras, but I can't help myself.  On a different note, I read the SX150 manual and found it has a half hour time limit on HD movies.  Could the code from the 150 be compared to the 130 to see what the differences are? I read the forum suggested by srsa_4c about movie lengths - way over my head.  I wonder if the SX150 has a better cooling fan allowing the record time to be extended.  I would reduce the HD quality a bit so that overheating would not occur.  Don't like the big files created by running SD for Time Lapse - also a big battery drain.  Wish there were 1 to 15 fps options on the camera.  Was excited about miniature mode when trying out the SX130 - am disappointed because of the fuzzy fringes.

As srsa_4c has said this is something that really needs a developer with access to the camera to do - unfortunately it's not a camera I own.
It should be possible; but requires digging around in the firmware to find the functions, transferring the relevant code into CHDK and patching and testing it.

Based on what I've seen on the IXUS310, reducing the movie quality won't increase your battery life (or reduce the temperature). Creating a movie requires the same amount of processing power regardless of quality setting - a lower quality will mean less data written to the SD card; but that does not seem to the the main power draw.

So then why would Canon put a limit on HD movie length but not SD length?

The files size limit is because FAT32 support a max file size of 4GB.
In theory with support for exFat in new cameras this could be removed as well; but it might require firmware changes that have not been done/tested yet.

IMO the time limit is probably due to heat - on the IXUS310 the camera gets very hot when recording 1080p; but not quite so hot doing 720p. Possibly newer cameras are more power efficient, or have better cooling.
