Going from ISO 100 to ISO 800, the exposures look identical (besides noise). However, when going to ISO 1600, I get an image slightly darker than expected. (The RAW is darker, the jpg gets brightened to nearly the correct level.) As far as I can tell, ISO 1600 is somewhere over ISO 800, but under ISO 1600. Maybe about ISO 1200... who knows.
As I said, the last stop of Canon ISO is usually done in software. The low light mode (also sometimes called iso3200 etc) is different again because it does some sort binning or something.

I'm not sure if you were using CHDK ISO override in this test. If so, note that the CHDK override values do not exactly match the Canon UI values: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_User_Manual#Override_ISO_value

I used the in-camera ISO settings.

I haven't noticed it until now, but reyalp you are absolutely right. The last stop of this camera is not hardware.
I put the camera in manual mode and set a correct exposure with the aperture/shutter speed with ISO 800 selected, then took a picture. Then I took another picture at ISO 1600 with no other changes. Both the ISO 800 and ISO 1600 RAWs were identical. The ISO 1600 jpeg was brighter (brightening done automatically in camera software).
___________

I could have sworn that I had ISO 50 working on this camera at one time, but recently I tried the ISO override again and it is no different from ISO 80.

My method for testing ISO 50:
Take an ISO 80 image (no override)
Take a second image with ISO override set to 50

Comparing the two today gives the exact same image. But I swear that I tried it months ago with another CHDK firmware and that the ISO 50 override image was darker (= ISO override worked).

If someone has a firmware version where ISO 50 works (gives a darker image than the non-override setting "80") then please upload it somewhere and give us link... thanks   :)

ISO 50 in the CHDK override should be very close to ISO 80 in the camera settings, because of the "market ISO" and "real ISO" difference I mentioned earlier. If your previous test involved comparing CHDK override to ISO 80 and ISO 50, you should have seen a difference. The CHDK override to ISO 80 comes out as ISO 125 in market values on my D10.

I have also run into issues the ISO doesn't end up being the Canon UI value after you turn the override off, until you go back and set it in the canon UI again.

In general, I don't think anyone who has done careful testing has ever shown ISO overrides lower than the minimum Canon value work.

I'm about to get into this and I have a question (and I have read all 65 pages of the thread). I understand that the SX130 has to use a card of 2G or less or, a partition of a larger card to start up CHDK. I'm leaning against the partition option as that would make it more difficult for everyone else in the house to use the camera so I thought of using a 2G card for the hack and a larger one for regular use.

I was thinking of starting with a slow 2G card and swapping it out for a faster one but that isn't going to work as the card slot is in the battery door. So, what is a fast enough card speed for this camera and where can you find a 2G version of it?

Martin.

You can actually use anything up to a 4G card, formatted FAT16 and boot from it.

I have SX130IS and can tell that you need Fast/very fast SD card
class 6 to 10.Because tranasfer of pictures to the card made in super fine mode, taken after every
shoot, take long time if the card is slow  .. and is irritable.
I'm using 8Gb SDHC class 10 Hama card. Two partitions - first boottable 7 Mb FAT 16 (or less -think 2 Mb is small -CHDK will grow), made with third party software under Windows, and the rest in second Partition for Pictures and movies (FAT 32).

I guess a 4G card reformatted to fat-16 it is!

Irronic that class 10 4G cards are cheaper than class 6 2G cards.

Thanks,
Martin.

apparently some manufacturers exaggerate their speed ratings - and there are a lot of counterfeit cards in circulation so its buyer beware - if it seems to good to be true it probably is

I just installed CHDK.
The menus all look good, but when I try to focus, the LCD screen becomes very grainy.
I took a photo of it (with my sucky camera phone) and uploaded it on imgur.

The red grains are very fluid and keep changing when I keep the shutter half pressed.

Can anyone take a look and tell me why this is happening?

Thanks!
