CHDK won't boot in a G9

Hi,
I have formatted with the FAT16 filesystem, made it bootable, and copied all the stuff into a 512 MB card; then protected it against writing, but it won't boot on the G9, either starting from the on/off switch or from the "|>" button. It works without a problem if I start it from this one and do the "upgrade" thing, but not in any other way.
Any ideas?

Well the autoboot process uses DISKBOOT.BIN whereas the firm update uses the PS.FIR file. Maybe the DISKBOOT.BIN is corrupt?

Hi,

Made it bootable using the canon BOOTDISK string as described on http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Bootable_SD_card ? This is *not* the same as the "make bootable" option in regular partition management tools.

When you say it won't boot, do you mean the camera does not start at all, or the camera starts normally ? If the latter, is there a "card locked" message ?

If the camera doesn't boot at all (just sits there without starting) then you are probably using the wrong diskboot. If it does start, without a card locked message, then it is likely the lock sensing switch is not working.

Are you using a Mac ? If so, be sure to read http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ/Mac#Still_Having_Trouble.3F
Don't forget what the H stands for.

I made it bootable via the "boot" option in gparted. I guess that's not enough. The camera does start, with the card locked message. I made everything from Linux.

otherwise, using dd on the command line, it should be something like this (where 'sdx1' is your card's device name)

for FAT16:

echo -n BOOTDISK | dd bs=1 count=8 seek=64 of=/dev/sdx1

...or use your favourite hexeditor to write BOOTDISK to sector 0 of your card @ offset hex 0x40 / decimal 64
