Hi,
I'm using my camera with a 3V power adapter. I would like to know if I can use the same 3V to trigger the camera, instead of using an external battery, like here:
http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/USB_Remote_Cable

Many thanks!.

Depends on your camera; since you didn't mention your camera model - have a look to the CameraFeatures page or just try it...

Assuming 3V is sufficient to trigger the camera, is there a possibility that connecting the USB pins to the camera's supply could lead to damage?

No chance. The usb circuitry inside the camera is protective and takes virtually no current from the power pins. It merely detects that a voltage has been applied.

Except perhaps in the case of inversed polarity. It is unlikely that this condition, impossible in normal operation, has been considered by the designers.

I don't use CHDK, but in one of the menus you have to enable the USB remote switch.
