Canon SD780 iS - can't get CHDK to run

Loaded the software but the camera will not start up - nothing happens.  Everything works fine with a clean card and if the battery is removed/reinstalled.

Here are a few details:
Everything is loaded on the card - a 4 Gb
Somewhere I read there must be one phone stored on the card for firmware to display - tried with and w/o a photo
I'm on a Windows XP computer
Installed Ver.req & Vers.req files

Files on the SD disk:
  • CHDK with all the folders (Books, Curves, Data, Fonts, ....)
    Diskboot
    PS.F12
    Ver.req
    Vers.req
    changelog
    readme

Any ideas/suggestions?
Thanks

Which canon firmware version does your camera have ? Only 100c is currently supported by CHDK.

To figure out what version of the SD780 IS camera you have, you need to copy the file vers.req and put it in the root directory of your memory card.  Put the memory card back in your camera. Turn the camera on by pressing the review mode button. Press and hold down both the Func Set button and then tap the down cursor button (erase / self timer) at the same time. Hopefully your camera will say it is a Firmware Ver GM1.00C so you can run the CHDK beta. If you tap the two buttons (func set and down cursor) a few times you can cycle through a few screens of information.

If you have the 1.00C firmware and still can't get CHDK to work with the camera try using http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CardTricks to load CHDK onto your memory card. Also use the card tricks feature to make the memory card bootable. Lock the memory card after copying the files onto it. Then insert it in your camera. Turn the camera on and it should start CHDK.

Thanks for the help.  I used ACID http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/acid/acid.html to easily identify the terrible news - I have firmware 100b....not 100c.
Now I'll look for a means to update the firmware....hoping its possible!  CHDK seems too good to pass up!
Thanks again!
Doug

Addendum
The above link does not work for some reason.  However the guy that developed the program can be found here   http://zenoshrdlu.com/  (look for link after "some of my recent software was written for CHDK and SDM") or a more direct link here: http://zenoshrdlu.com/kapstuff/zchdkstuff.html

No, it is not possible to update the Canon firmware unless Canon has issued an update for that camera. They do not do this for most firmware revisions.

Unfortunately, you are out of luck until a CHDK port is made for your firmware revision. Porting to different revisions of a given camera is quite a bit easier than doing a full port, but it still needs a developer to do it.
