drop.io to remove all content starting DEC 15

drop.io sold out to Facebook and posted on their blog that they'll remove their content starting from Dec 15.

See http://drop.io/future.htm

Now I know I've been very absent from the forum posting-wise because I've been very busy with life but I'd like to offer my help..

If you guys tell me where most stuff that's related to chdk is located, I can download the files to a dedicated server I own and keep them backed up there. I know there's various drops with firmwares and everything so rather than missing one, I guess it would be better to let me know and I can save them straight to my server.

I could also set up a ftp account so developers can upload files and have them served through a simple website... like the one I have set up for another project: http://mplayer.savedonthe.net/test_files/

A search in this forum on http://drop.io/ would probably give a good list already. I would store the file, leave filenames intact and store in server root e.g. like http://newfilelication.org/thefilename.tgz. The CHDK forum maintainers could then run a script that ajusts the forum and all will keep on working.

FYI - all firmware dumps (and also all other CHDK related important files) are stored in dry & safe places...

--> All firmware dumps are backed up at  http://www.box.net/chdk

BTW - I suggest to use always a simple link to a storage place (e.g. to a shared folder) ;)

In any way it would be great to have a mirror in another server.
At least I am having problems downloading *.exe files from the mentioned link.
For example go to "TOOLS" folder and try to download "bootable.exe".
I have the following message:

And FTP allows batch downloads, while on http server you should click every individual file to download it.

I've managed to get chdkdevelopment but the others don't show the "download as archive" button.

For now, they're on my server as ftp but I can create a subdomain of some sort, like  "files.*.com" and do something...

Code: [Select]
ftp://helpedia.com/pub/mirrors/drop.io/chdkdevelopment/

(the forum scripts add http in front if I write it directly and it gets screwed up)

I'm not really keen on downloading all the dumps manually, but if the person that uploaded the files in the first place on drop.io  can upload them on rapidshare or some other file sharing page, I can copy them to my server and have them as backup.

It would be great to have shorter name (like files.chdk.com or chdkfiles.<yourhost>.com) :)

Well, for something like that to happen, someone would have to buy a domain (or I could set up a subdomain on a domain I own).

But I've had this discussion a while ago and the point was made that the programmers don't want to rely on any private person or a commercial/private site for stuff, in case it goes away or relations with that person break down... that's why free stuff like drop.io and wikia was used.

I personally have no problems hosting these on my servers and if there is interest, I could create an upload account for mods or whoever wants to manage the files better...

I just don't have time to browse the forum daily and catch all the new files posted on various file sharing sites and keep everything to date otherwise.

ps. I guess who has the forum now, could also create chdkfiles.setepontos.com, direct it to my server's ip and I can have it serve the folder with the files ... coupled with the ftp upload thing, it would work just fine and in case I can no longer keep everything on my server, you can just copy everything from ftp and set it somewhere else.

I have the following message:

I think that's just a questions of fe50's settings, I get the same message ...
Try my CHDK-Shell folder here http://www.box.net/shared/njaq9vvozu, which I think
works OK, if you observe below ...

I did play a lot with my settings to get an idea what box.net requires, it seems you need to

1) allow scripts on the  .box.net and .boxcdn.net domains [edit: only if you block trackers ?]
2) allow cookies and 3rd party cookies - accessing causes a box.net and a google.com cookie;
they don't need to be persistent though (session only or removing them after DL is OK)

Box also tries to get you to install flash (which I don't have) but you don't need it to DL

Since I hate Web2.0 [admin: avoid swearing please], I also have Ghostery running (stops trackers) which indicates that it
also tries to access google analytics (maybe my google cookie is just enforced on me be because I
jam analytics ?)

HTH,

wim

Some words about "the box"

Downloading executable files from shared folders (like the chdk folder is one) is not allowed for anonymous users, instead direct links to such files can be used:
Quote
We do not currently support direct-linking of .exe files. This option was abused in the past by spammers and those intent on distributing malware. You can still share .exe files with normal shared links and collaboration folders.

A Box shared link will have the following format:
http://www.box.net/shared/XXXXXXXXXXX

A Box direct link will have the following format:
https://www.box.net/shared/static/XXX... (file extension)
I'll upload renamed (e.g. with .ex_ extension) versions the next days ... BUT HEY, this is a backup server, the drops are still available, there are also mirrors for all related files available !

For box collaborators it's simple & very comfortable to manage things there in the box, the limits are only for non-collaborators (aka anonymous users).
Since this is a free account (box.net Lite), IMO the limitations are really fair...

Bulk downloads, i.e. downloading whole folders or multiple files, are not allowed for non-collaborators - IMO this is also a fair limitation, this may help saving bandwith/traffic (box Lite accounts are limited to 10GB).
If users could download the whole shared folder with a simple click, they would do this & would "kill" the account after a few days  ;)

My experiences with box.net are good until now, much better then with drop.io...

I've managed to get chdkdevelopment but the others don't show the "download as archive" button.
Sorry, i can't do anything to solve this; this is a drop.io malfunction, i guess they won't repair this before they they switch off the light...

I think the better solution is just pack them with zip or something like this, even if files are already sfx archives and will not become smaller.
