SD780 CHDK installation fail

hi, I fail on this step for my SD780
Quote
- Scroll to the bottom of the menu to the "Firm Update" option which
  should now be available. If by chance that you fail to see the "Firm
  Update" menu option try pressing your Playback button twice. You might
  have to wait 2 seconds between presses. When this is done right the
  lens will retract and go into a power-saving viewer/slideshow playback
  mode. This seems to be an option on most Powershot Cameras.

Any ideas?

Start the camera with the playback button, not the power button.

If you are using a Mac, see http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ/Mac#Still_Having_Trouble.3F

Don't forget what the H stands for.

I was using the playback button, and I unarchived using terminal...

% cd /Volumes/CANON_DC
% unzip ~/ixus100_sd780-100c-0.9.9-966-full_BETA.zip

Rather than use "Firm Update", why not make the card bootable. My SDMInst Mac app will do the job for you (despite the name it works just as well for CHDK as it does for SDM).

Did you check for the extended attributes described in the FAQ entry I linked ?

If you are using a Mac, this is very likely to be the problem.

I'll check out the bootable

@reyalp

I did see the extended attributes section. Thanks. ( That's why I showed that I was unarchiving via terminal as opposed to Archive Utility )

@zeno:

Formatting two partitions on disk3 named SD and SDMInstaller
Command 'diskutil partitionDisk disk3 2 MBR "MS-DOS FAT16" 'SD' 16M "MS-DOS FAT32" 'SDMInstaller' R' = '!Error
SDMInstaller does not appear to be a valid volume name for its file system'
   return code was 1

got this error: http://screenshots.otherware.org/SDM_CHDK_Installer_for_OSX_-_Version_1.11-20101109-085800.png

copying the files from the canon since they're already on there

@anywho

I think "SDMInstaller" is too long a name - try "SDMInstal" instead.

I just tried both names on my machine - the long one got rejected with the same error msg you got, the shorter one was accepted.

The install worked now, but still no luck with the camera :/ firmware is definitely 1.0.0c

Did you change the "copy from" to somewhere on your Mac? The card got formatted, so there were no files on it when it got to the copy stage.
