Hi,

(**** NEWBIE ****)

I can disable my cell phone so that it doesn't accidentally go off-hook while its in my pocket.

Is there a way to disable the power button on the 870IS so that the camera doesn't inadvertently turn on while in my pocket?

Take the battery out :)

CHDK can't prevent the camera from powering on at all (CHDK is software, it doesn't run if the camera is not on!) but you could have it power back down almost instantly, before the lens extracted or the display turned on. The canon firmware already does something like this the battery door switch: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=5744.0

You'd need some way to indicate when you wanted to boot for real though... maybe holding a button down ? We already detect holding down the power button on many cameras so you can start in REC mode. Shutting down if a button or particular combination wasn't held would probably be fairly easy.
