Is there a howto for a diy remote?

Before you say, "they're everywhere".  Here are my requirements

1) Wireless (not essential but desired)
2) Something that a non-electronics geek can follow
3) Hardware that I can actually PURCHASE (no I can't buy this obscure wireless doorbell anywhere even if I could follow the directions)

Is there anything like this because I haven't ran into anything except for, "oh yeah I just got a dog shock collar", "oh, a remote control car works great".  Is it just that all camera-nerds are also electronics-nerds or something? ;)

Thanks!

Thank you Microfunguy,

I actually ran into fvdk's stuff on flicker and youtube, but I couldn't find any way of contacting him.  I didn't know he was on this forum. I guess I should get a hold of him through PM.

Hi, well i just happened to post in another part of the forum a mageneticallly activated switch my goal was to make an submersible enclosure, but it can work for you, its "wireless" in a way and it uses available parts you can get online.
So this is the post:
