I'm having trouble getting CHDK to be recognized. I am able to get the version using vers.req (1.00E). I downloaded the proper file (sx30-100e-0.9.9-1001) and extracted the "DISKBOOT.BIN" and "PS.FI2" file to my SD card. When I boot the camera in play mode, I do not get any firmware option in the tools menu.  I have tried reformatting the card with the camera and then putting the 2 files on there, and also tried having a picture on the camera along with the files.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

EDIT: nevermind, I'm an idiot :) I was not hitting "up" after pressing menu (for some reason scrolling down does not show the firmware option, but scrolling up does).

Now to figure out how to use CHDK. My main interest is extending the shutter beyond 15 seconds, and also ability to take time-lapse photos. From what I understand the time-lapse will have to be done via a script. Any advise would be appreciated!

Thanks!

EDIT #2: I have successfully used exposures longer than the stock 15s. Now to figure out how to do time-lapses. Need to find a script I suppose.

The 'Firm Update' option should appear as the bottom most option in the Play Settings menu (leftmost menu in play mode). You have to scroll down to get to it.
You have to start the camera in play/review mode using the rear button not the top one (starting in shooting mode and then switching to play/review will not work).

Thanks, Phil and all you guys who helped.  You're awesome!

I'm using an 8GB card, and partitioning the card is just far enough above my skill level to be scary.  I'm starting CHDK manually each time I turn the cam on.

hi Philmoz, I'm the guy who uploaded the 1.00H firmware. I would like to thank you for your great work!!! I'm myself a sw developer and know what effort is behind it.
The chdk runs with no errors. I have not tested all functions yet, because I'm new to chdk. Raw file is being saved very fast.

Can you please give a piece of advice. How can I convert the saved crw files into something I could process  further like dng?
First I wanted to try dng4ps, but the dl link is broken. The dng4ps2 does not show the shoot raw files, which I copied to hdd.

Another question, has anyone tried the autoboot mode? If it principally works I'll go for repartitioning my sd card and try to install it.

Many thanks to all that contribute to chdk !!!

Kind regards,

Andrew

Hi!

- Aperture & ISO overrides don't appear to work.
I checked Auto ISO with firmware 1.00L and limiting the ISO value does not work.

On Windows machines you can try IrfanView. You need to install the plugin package too.
On Macs you can try Rawker.
Both tools are for free, but I didn't have the chance to test them yet.

Best, Achim

My Pc is running Windows 7. I installed the IrfanView and the Plugins pack. On opening a crw file an error occurs, which says "Not a valid RAW file". I have tried it with other raw files I shot with my SX30 - the result is all the same :-(

does not even work with "using Canon DLLs" option.

The RAW files produced by CHDK aren't the same as those produced by cameras that have native RAW support.
CHDK files are just dumps of the raw image buffer with no header information.
Canon RAW files are compressed, and include EXIF data with all the shooting info.

At the moment the only option is to use the CHDK DNG options to save a DNG file directly. On a fast SD card this takes about 1/2 second longer than saving a RAW file.

Regards,
Phil.

@andrewz

... or try RawTherapee
It's free (starting with v3 even open source) and has so far opened any raws I threw at it.

HTH,

wim

PS Using the stable version 2.4.1 myself, works fine on Win 7 x64 (it's 32 bits though)

I tried rawtherapee yesterday - it does not open raw from sx30.

I thinks that is the reason. I even read somewhere, different canon cams produce different raw files. that's why programs are mostly accompanied with a supported models list.

that is going to be my next step. I thought, I'll better shoot raw because it's faster to save. But if there is no visible way to further process the raw, I'll try with dng.

Are there some problems with dng in the beta or it works properly?

Thanks

Andrew
