Does the auto hyperfocal feature work on the G9? I must be doing something wrong. I load CHDK, select MF, go into alt mode and then press the down button and nothing happens. Sorry if I am missing something obvious. I've been over it many times and cannot figure out what is wrong.

Also, I am looking for a way to turn off the LCD screen while in MF mode (with it set to the hyperfocal distance). Can this be done?

Hello and welcome.
Setting the hyperfocal distance does not work on a G9 in CHDK. It does work if you use SDM instead (see Wiki for download). This blog site has a good tutorial on setting up your G9 http://j.mp/feHYcQ
You can turn off your LCD at any time by using the Display button

Thanks Colin. Having looked at the SDM page and the blog post you suggested I think it makes more sense for me to just manually set the focus to about 9 or 10 feet, leave the focal length at 7.4mm, and save it to C1 or C2 like the blog suggests.

Unfortunately, turning off the screen by pressing the display button when MF is set puts the camera back in autofocus mode. I was hoping for a way around that.

Whenever i try to use hyperfocal distance setting, I use aperture priority, this certainly works using the blog method I mentioned and it also works with SDM. This alternative to CHDK has a menu item in the overrides, which specifically allows focus to be set to hyperfocal. If you also use aperture priority at the same time, Bob's your uncle, turn the LCD off and use an optical viewfinder in the hotshoe. This combo of settings shd speed up shooting as the lens is pre-focused- see the blog for what to turn off/on. Great for parties or unobtrusive shooting.
With the right focal-length OVF and hyperfocal setting, you are ready to rock. My OVF is for 35mm which equates to minimum zoom on the G9. Different focal lengths will accommodate different zoom settings, easy to match up since SDM shows the focal length in 35mm film equivalent

Hello,
That is an interesting discovery and a very tiresome feature. Turning the screen off also resets the Flexizone focus area, which I use offset to correspond with the SDM gridlines intersection (Golden mean and something else combined). Can it all go into a pre-set?
I have used the blog method, but it is very hard to include all the settings- a crib sheet wd help- and it is easy to alter the pre-sets unintentionally. I think the SDM method is easier to work with, turn on Misc Display in SDM menus and you can see the focal distance confirming the hyperfocal override. Press the MF button on your G9 for a magnified view for extra confirmation.
