Send photos to PC over USB

Hi, is possible using chdk firmware to directly send photos using USB cord to PC?
Would be a very handy feature it ti's not available :)

I have my PC on a tripod and since canon no longer makes remote control cameras that can be controlled over USB with PSRemote I was thinking that if there is away to access SD card via PC in camera than it must be possible to make camera write to PC folder directly.

Thanks

Work in progress, see http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=4338.msg41232#msg41232

If you're skilled enough, you can already do this but if you aren't you'll need to wait until things are in a more user friendly shape.

The other way to do this is to use the camera's built-in PTP, which only works in play mode (CHDK scripts can switch between REC and PLAY). SDM may have some ready to use hacks implemented to make that work out of the box. In any case it requires some software on PC side to activate whenever the camera appears -- the camera won't be pushing files to the PC.

You could try this : http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/upload.htm

I have not looked at it lately so don't know if there are any problems or if it works with CHDK.

"The USB option is useful if you do not wish to disturb your rig in order to gain access to the memory cards."

"For uploading via USB, turn-on your camera, in Scripting menu uncheck 'Disable USB Download' and switch to playback mode.
If you are using a dual-partition card, use SDM menu option Debug\Swap partitions before proceeding.
Remember to swap again (using the SDM installer) to restore camera to normal SDM booting.
Alternatively, just unlock your card and startup in playback mode."

Other than single partition cards, it's not worth it

The idea is to use ultrazoom camera for macro photography. I got the precise XYZ focusing table from ebay :) I just need to get some camera with 12x or more zoom.

CHDK firmware is very good especially the forced dark frame remove feature, that makes hot pixels go away.

After you set things up, you can't touch the camera. So USB control would be awesome, but hey canon removed it. I wonder WHY?

So I'll have to wait until this PTP feature becomes available in new versions. The question is how long may that be?

You could use an Eye-Fi SD-card to send the photos to your PC through a wifi-connection. You would still need another tool to control the camera though.

Well I did  try this, but the problem was transfer speed. The speed is very slow.

I found this device:

Mobidapter - SD to USB Adapter
http://www.saelig.com/MIO/MIO001.htm

But I can't understand will it work with cable to PC USB or only with USB thumb drives?

Another device is SanDisk SD card with built-in USB adapter
http://www.engadget.com/2005/01/06/sandisk-ces-sd-card-with-built-in-usb-adapter/

Anyone knows if it works hooked up both ways? I mean you can insert it in SD and USB port simultaneously?

I think this is not suitable for your need. It is ment to read an USB-thumbdrive in a phone (or maybe a camera), not to be connected directly to a PC.

Again, no. In this case, the device has to be folded open to use it as a USB-drive. I don't think it can fit into your camera that way. Maybe you could try to attach a usb cable to it with some creative DIY, but even then I doubt if it will allow simultaneous access from the SD and the USB side.
