Question about CHDK remote shutter

I have been reading a lot about the remote shutter function for CHDK via the usb port, but I have a question.  All the designs I've seen only seem to use a regular button, meaning apparently there would be no way to do the 1/2 click to lock in your settings.

Is there any way that you are able to do 1/2 click with the remote control?  That way you eliminate all the delay and the shot fires off instantly? (well within .2 milliseconds or whatever the delay is).  Or is that not possible and there will always be a delay when using a remote shutter?

i am not sure if CHDK is the same, but with SDM the first click can set camera to autofocus mode, the second press-and-release fires the shutter.

Alternatively, the Ricoh CA-1 (or Chinese clone of it) can be used.

That has a two-stage button.

The behaviour depends on the settings in "Remote Parameters" menu:

With scripted remote you can evaluate the pulse length to use multiple commands, e.g. with a little microcontroller like the  PICAXE.
For samples you may have a look to the links on the wika page, e.g.
