Best way to get video feed from my a590 and Where is CHDKCAM???

I'm trying to capture the preview feed off of my a590 and although I know it's not possible with something like gPhoto using the cannon api, I keep reading things about ptpcam, and now something about chdkcam.   I installed ptpcam (on linux, but I also have windows) but I couldn't find out how to grab the video.  Then I read something about  chdkcam, but all the documentation on any of this amounts to developers in 24-page forum threads discussing their current issue.  The wiki for chdkcam and googling "chdkcam download" certainly doesn't yield any info.  So my questions are:

1) Can someone tell me if it is even possible to do capture the feed in this way and point me to any instructions if it is?
2) Where do I download chdkcam to even test it?

Thank you for the great project!
james

This feature is not available in current CHDK builds. It will be re-added eventually. You can find information in the PTP thread http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=4338.0 and wiki page http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/PTP_Extension

It is my intention to add this capability back to standard CHDK builds, but at the moment my time is very limited, so progress is fairly slow.

PTP cam has no video capture or display capabilities.

The second includes a download link for chdkcam, but this will only work the appropriate CHDK build.

The current CHDK implementation does allow you to read memory, so you could hack your own version that reads the live view and does something with it. On linux, it should be fairly easy to hack ptpcam to continuously read the live view and feed it to a pipe or something.

I thought it was more common to pull something like this off.  How was it that balloons got a photobooth running (with live feed I think):

Was he using some dev chdk build?

My understanding is that this did not do live video, it just used ptpcam to shoot pictures and transfer files.

Well one of his requirements was:

"Display a live feed from the camera on laptop"

So I assumed that it was live video.  What does CHDKCAM do, and where is the installer or source?

But if you look at the script, it's just a python wrapper around ptpcam. It's possible that he used the cameras built in analog video out to do the display. With the appropriate hardware, this could be displayed on the PC.

See the links previously provided. (corrected a typo to make it clearer...)

Yes... your options are either to see if ewavr's ptp thing was ever ported to a590 (I thought it was?) and use that build for now unless you require features recently added to CHDK, or you can use the camera's composite video output and feed its signal to a video capture device (inexpensive USB gadgets exist for this).
