The gigapan robot looks like a nice piece of equipment - for $300, $450 pr $800 for the pro model.

I was wondering about doing large stitched panoramas just with a camera supporting CHDK. Is there a script out  there using an intervalometer and some kind of edge detection so we can be the robot and move the camera into position as directed by the script? The pano mode in some of the Canon cameras already does this but only for a limited number of shots and horizontally.  I'm thinking in terms of unlimited shots both horizontally and vertically and in descending order from upper left of pano to lower right as the gigapan unit does it.

Maybe it would be better to just save up and buy a gigapan robot, though I'm sure others here have experimented with controlled taking of panoramas.

You can make a simple gigapan-like robot using James Gentle's ClickPanSDM device and a camera running SDM. See http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/clickpansdm/ for a video of a KAP rig doing something like that. Apart from the ClickPanSDM you just need a couple of servos and some aluminium strip.
