Updating CHDK in a S3IS

Over the past few years I have been updating CDHK for the S3IS at regular intervals.

By current technical standards, the S3IS is now considered an old camera. I check the CHDK-SVN autobuild download site regularly for updates applicable to the S3IS. Is it worthwhile continuing the S3IS CHDK updates or alternatively keep the S3IS as a backup camera and purchase a new primary camera?

I was considering purchasing a DSLR. The Magic Lantern project is in its early stages. Are there any intensions that the CHDK developers will fork the Magic Lantern project for CHDK membership use and keep the development on the CHDK forum?

Your choice. Some CHDK improvements are applicable to all cameras, some aren't.

I don't follow. Forking is what you do if there are irreconcilable differences in the way the code is managed or the direction of development. If any CHDK developers wanted to contribute to Magic Lantern, I'm sure we'd try to work together first. All the current developers have limited time to work on this stuff, making extra work for no good reason is not high on the list of things to do.

Speaking for myself, I don't see contributing to DSLR development unless santa brings me a DSLR ;)
Don't forget what the H stands for.

@reyalp

Thanks for the advice. I don't understand programming. I will keep up the incremental updates on the S3IS.

The reason I asked about Magic Lantern is that a number of blogs on the net give conflicting information regarding the Magic Lantern development. My understanding is that the original developers of Magic Lantern are movie makers. Forking may be the incorrect world to use. There is internet talk of a movie branch and photography branch. When in doubt it always best to ask someone who is knowledgeable and not rely on the internet gossip.

Yes, almost all early ML development was directed towards video. But later 550D builds (and also 500D/60D ones) have tons of dedicated stuff for photo. Also, I've actually ported some small bits of code from CHDK and I'll continue to do so.

In ML there are two menus dedicated to video recording (Audio and Movie), one menu specific for stills (Shoot) and two menus common for movie and photo (Expo and LiveV).

Check the PDF user guide from latest builds (inside the zip) to get an overview of what it can do:

@a1ex,

Thanks for the link. If I have any farther queries I will start a new thread in the DSLR CHDK Development section.
