CanNOT Manually load CHDK (missing PS.FIR/FI2)

I just got my 32Gb (class10) card today.

Trying to perform the steps (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,3490.msg35163.html#msg35163)  to enable CHDK to work off it but cannot get the card to manually boot.  There is no option in the menu called "Firmware Update".  Tried the card locked & unlocked.  I am using the camera in the display mode.  I noticed that the versions of CHDK I have do not have any PS.FIR or PS.FI2 files in the zipped file.

I grabbed the PS.FIR and PS.F12 files from a completely different camera and placed them at the root of the 32Gb card and now when I start the camera in display mode I DO see an option for Firmware Update, but it gives me an error when I try and do it.  I assume this is due to the fact that I obtained the files from different model cameras ??

My Camera is an SX20IS.  The Firmware is 1.02c so I am using "sx20-102d-0.9.9-1053.zip".

With out these files I cannot start CHDK manually and therefore cannot follow the steps to enable the 32Gb card.

BTW,
I loaded CHDK to my 4GB card no problem, BUT since this build is missing the PS files, it too will not allow me to manually load CHDK due to the missing menu option (firmware update).

Were the PS files just forgotten in the build for my SX20IS ?

THANKS!

As you can see here http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/SX20 the SX20 does not support manual loading, you have to put DISKBOOT.BIN on a bootable card. And with a 32GB card, that means you have to create 2 partitions - a small one (16MB say) formatted as FAT16 to hold DISKBOOT.BIN, and the rest of the card, formatted as FAT32 for the other CHDK files (eg scripts) + photos.

PS.FIR files, like DISKBOOT.BIN, are camera-specific - there is no possibility of one for a different camera working on yours.

Ah, THX for the quick reply's!

So because it's the SX20IS, it cannot do the manual thing.  I see.

I went to the links provided.  From what I gather I cannot partition my camera using the method I posted above.  It says I must  "...You can do the partitioning with the SDMInstaller tool for Windows".  SO I followed the link to that page, but guess what....it does not list the SX20IS  :(

Am I stuck in a catch22 with the SX20IS?

Provided someone knows how to get two partitions on a card for use on an SX20IS, I do have one question :  Since the storage partition would be formatted in FAT32, would I be able to record VIDEO files larger than 4Gb each ?

THANKS

it does not list the SX20IS

This only refers to StereoDataMaker ! The partitioning tool will work on any camera.

You can find it in this zip, it is called sdminste.exe

Nope, FAT32 file system can not create files > 4 GB (and AFAIK neither do the 'new' SDXC supporting Canons,
although theoretically the exFAT filesystem lifts this limitation)

FINALLY.

Success!

Using SDM I was able to make 2 partitions on my 32Gb card. (1 which is 2Mb and the other which is the rest).

The only pitfall/hassle is that you can ONLY off load pics/videos to a PC if you have SDM installed on it so that you can switch the partitions and them switch them back b4 re-inserting the card.

This means you will be stuck if you're trying to offload pics on someone else's PC.....

Thanks for the links and tips!!!!!!!!!!

@rms8

to be completely sure, put it on both partitions (in case you take the card, but not the cam on the road)

have fun,

wim

Good point.

Just loaded that very small app (~ 24Kb) onto both partitions.  This way I can run the app from any PC.

Thanks!

Even with the sdm copied on both partitions, there will be situations when you won't be able to read the card at all.
I tried a lot of card readers (unfortunately, even bought some) before finding this out. Also, some Toshiba Satellite laptop is not able to read it whereas my 2 netbooks (eeepc & aspire one) have no problem whatsoever. Just make sure, when you buy the card reader that you could test it / or send back for refund.
