So up until now i have been trying to process my raws in photomatix and always thinking "man WTF this [admin: avoid swearing please] sucks, every picture is grainy!". well i think it has something to do with Photomatix. I opened a raw in photoshop today and noticed its crystal clear (and the camera raw componet is awesome!)!!! i opened the same thing in photomatix and it was very grainy. this is very interesting. something with photomatix maybe?

It might have to do with the defualt auto exposure setting on the dcraw rutines that photomatrix uses.

Which version of photomatix are you using? The older versions have this problem but with the newest version (2.5.4 or plugin version 1.2) you get all kinds of sliders for smoothing which even give nice results for single jpeg files.
