How can I start AllBest's Build for a720is on 8Gb sdhc card?
Or, at least, how can I format 8Gb sdhc card to 4Gb for FAT filesystem?

This works for me with a 4 GB SDHC Card in Windows XP:

I use a separate USB SDHC adapter--I don't know if you can formate "through the camera" directly...

Open a DOS wind (START, RUN, CMD <enter>)

To format with FAT16 (substitute Drive "Z:" with your drive letter)

format Z: /fs:fat

then

bootable Z:  The "bootable.exe" program is available from several download areas... The "bootable" program must be in the directory where your CMD window is running, or in your "PATH")

then

copy the bin file to SDHC Card root.

Write protect card to boot into CHDK (little switch on side of SDHC card).

Note, FAT 16 only supports native 2GB cards. 4GB cards may have problems--but works fine for me.

As I understand, if you want to use CHDK with auto-boot (a must for the A720IS), the file system must be FAT 16 and when you formate an 8 GB SDHC card for FAT 16, you will get a slightly non-standard FAT 16 file system with a maximum of 4 GB of addressable space.

You will not be able to address the full 8GB card using this process... You will only be able to address 4 GBytes.

So far, works fine on my A720is and Windows XP...

I, too, am eager to learn how to use the full capacity of an 8GB card. I was under the impression that the dual partition capability of builds 33 and 34 would allow that. Has anyone made ttis work on a DryOS camera with an 8GB (or larger) card?

You can read through this thread:

http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,255.0.html

and see a few thoughts on multiple partitions for 8GB SDHC cards... It does not sound like an easy (or even yet working) way of making it work.

The limitations is with the camera internal software and its own limits... Unless somebody can "game" the format on a 8GB SDHC card or creates a "multiple boot" series of CHDK program(s) (first one boots in FAT16 and then points "camera file system" to the 8GB partition or something similar--we are sort of at the mercy of Canon (who is still selling their "high-speed" 0.5 GByte cards...

Or better yet, can we have multiple (2x, 4x, 8x) 4GB FAT16 partitions?   (And how do we create them?)
How about "autobooting"  into a pre-selected partition?

I am still trying to grasp the multiple partiion feature that has been discussed.

See Build 34

I find nothing in CHDK on my A650 (allbest build 34) that I can identify as relating to this.
