hi all i have almost put together my effort at making a remote usb, now im a bit puzzled as it is showing a 5+ volt before i press the switch. then it cuts out when i press the switch. is this ok? as it means the current will be going to the camera all the time. i thought it would be the other way (current when you press it) i haven't put it together yet until i know for certain. please help,as i have a kitchen full of bits at the moment.

It should be the other way around.

+5V when you press the switch.

Good night.

Regardless of whether you think it is correct, swap the wires around.
"i am sure i have the wiring correct" implies to me that you have a changeover switch rather than a simpler normally-open or normally closed switch.

You had better post a photo of the switch and wiring.

In electrical engineering terms,  you might have what is know as a "normally closed" switch rather than a "normally open" switch.  These are common and commercially available and would product exactly the effect you describe. Reversing the wires will make no difference.

If this is true you need to buy another switch and be sure to get N.O. this time rather than N.C.

Note that it is also possible to buy a "three way" switch that is has three terminals - a common terminal, a normally open terminal and a normally closed terminal. I you have three terminals you might need to test which terminal is which.

@twinshot

I use a commercial USB switch (RICOH CA1 Remote Release Cable) with my SX20 and it indeed requires +5 volts. Here is a good reference on the SDM web site showing what the commercial switch produces: http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/ca1.htm

thanks for all the advise guys. got it sorted, the guy in the shop gave me a push to break switch, and not a push to make switch. i was not happy when i found out, but to be fair to the guy both switches are identical except for the stock number on the packet. I'm glad i used push on bullet connectors and didn't solder it. anyway all is ok now it is showing 6.2 volts when i push the switch.i have been told that voltage is ok for a 480.
