I've successfully got the ultimate intervalometer running (for kite aerial photography) on my Ixus 850, but now whenever I go into Alt mode, the intervalometer is ready to run and that's all I can do. As soon as I press the shutter it's intervalometer! I can't take single photos and make use of all the tricks CHDK offers me. Am I missing something obvious? Is there a way to "run" CHDK without running a script - is there a way to escape from the script?
What you describe is normal. As long as you don't press the shutter button the script won't start. Whenever you use the <Alt> key to enter the CHDK menu, the last script run will always be shown.

Note: If you would like to change which script is shown, many people just load the "default script" so it is shown - if you press the shutter button by mistake, very little will happen.
2 - To go back to the normal Canon operation just press the <Alt> button again and you'll be able to shoot like normal. CHDK is still active since it was installed when you booted the camera. You usually only go into the CHDK menu to run scripts or change CHDK options and then return to normal Canon operations afterwards.
