Install CHDK on an Eye-Fi card?

Hi all,

I'm attempting to install CHDK on an eye-fi card but I'm running into problems. I have a 4GB + Wi-Fi card. These new cards have sliding locks on the side, which eliminates one of the hitches to getting chdk installed. But I'm used to installing CHDK using "cardtricks", and cardtricks wants to format my Eye-Fi card as Fat32 before making it bootable. I'm a bit leary of doing that! Does anyone have any advice on how to get CHDK onto the card and bootable?

I understand that it's possible to install CHDK without making it bootable. But using cardtricks, I find that the "chdk->card" option is also greyed out.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.  (One note -- I have gotten around an initial glitch that occurred when trying to install chdk on an eye-fi card on the computer that had eye-fi running.  Cardtricks didn't recognize the card, perhaps because the Eye-Fi program was accessing it.  So I switched to a laptop (no Eye-Fi program) for the CHDK installation).

Thanks.

Looks like it is possible to format an eye-fi card (http://support.eye.fi/eye-fi-setup/account-management/account-overview/can-i-format-my-eye-fi-card/), so I'm going to try it.

I successfully installed CHDK on an eye-fi connect x2 4gb card by formatting it as FAT16 from the command prompt on a Windows PC. This does not affect the Eye-fi functionality. The only thing you lose is the pre-packaged eye-fi setup, which is probably out of date, and the newest one is available on their website anyway.

For example if your eye-fi card is I:, the command would be:

format I: /FS:FAT

if you want to give it a name like EyeFi, then the command would be

format I: /V:EyeFi /FS:FAT

it will use a nonstandard cluster size, but that doesn't appear to be an issue with anything, ever, as far as I can tell.

I've successfully formatted a 4g eye-fi card using the standard instructions for cardtricks.  It works... like magic.

That sounds pretty slick.  I may have to try to find a way to buy one of these! So you can have CHDK running and taking pictures in something like a timelapse script, and have the pictures copied to your PC via wireless network without having to touch the camera.  Hmmm.. You can delete files as well?  And copy them TO the camera?

don't think you can copy back to the camera from the computer, don't know anything about timelapse scripts in particular, but chdk scripts all seem to work, and "touchless" transfer to the computer works like magic.

Be careful  .. an SDM time-lapse user has had great problems trying to delete images and has been in discussion with Eye-fi.

As far as I know, the issue is not resolved : http://forums.eye.fi/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2986&p=12699&hilit=endless+memory#p12699

Reading about the eyefi X2, I read that they have to be formatted as FAT32 for "endless memory" to delete files.
Is that true from your experience? If endless memory works with FAT16, then this $49 card would save me TONS of trouble (even with the 3 power cycle - delete files issue).

I am curious if this really does work "correctly", or just "almost correctly."

I have CHDK installed on a 4gb Eye-fi X2 card. I formatted the card as FAT16 with non-standard cluster size, which seems to work fine for Eye-fi transfer and CHDK timelapse.

BUT - Eye-fi says that Endless Memory Mode will only work with FAT32. Can CHDK delete files on the FAT32 partition in a script if I make a small FAT16 partition and swap to a bigger FAT32 partition on boot (other successful method for CHDK + 2GB cards)?

It seems that for "Endless Memory" file deletion, maybe the FAT32 swap is the only way.. But then you have to power cycle ~4 times before 50 photos get deleted (according to talk on Eye-fi Forum). But there is no way to delete files with CHDK ONLY if they are successfully uploaded by eye-fi.

My SX30IS has an eye-fi menu, so the Canon firmware is eye-fi aware. If CHDK could interface with the eye-fi card (or even read the eye-fi log) somehow, then maybe CHDK could do the file management work, and Eye-fi could do what it does best - upload the photos.

Any thoughts?
