A530: Stock battery gauge always reads critical?

Even with a fresh pair of fully charged batteries, my A530's stock battery gauge is always flashing red - and after taking 1 or 2 pictures, it will go into auto-shutdown "Change the batteries" mode. The CHDK battery meter reads full, and displays voltages in the desired range. Even using fresh alkalines for their higher voltage, it does the same thing.

Any idea what's going on?

What happens if you don't run CHDK (e.g. by unlocking the card)?

I hadn't considered that. Same thing happens. So I take it the camera is shot?

EyeMWing,

This may be of no help but ............? How long have you had the camera - have you had (previous) battery experience with it?

Brand new Powershot A550; same behavior as your A530 with "Ultra Pro" and "Powerex" NiMH AA's. Tried regular and rechargeable alkalines, couple of brands - same problem.

Camera back to Canon who reported "no fault found" - but camera didn't know that!

So, looked around, tried "Rayovac Hybrid" and operation has been perfect for well over two years, fairly regular use. A battery the camera likes!

Apparently, some of these cameras are extremely sensitive to battery differences (dimensions or whatever). Few cameras in many of one model may behave idiosyncratically. Maybe if you try other batteries (and perhaps your patience) you could get lucky.

Perhaps your A530 is not "shot" - this info may be of no use but a having dead camera can feel like :'( ..... so had to respond.

Best to you!

P.S. Camera refuses to eat what it doesn't like, to this day!

Been using the same line of Energizer NiMHs since day 1 - which at this point must be at least 4 years ago. Replacing the batteries over time as they dissapear into the nether/stop holding charge/start corroding, of course.

Sorry! I thought there was a slim chance. Have you tried cleaning contacts, top and bottom, in camera?
